Thank you so much for being here today. I’m the founder and executive director of Community Sustainability USA, a charitable nonprofit corporation. Our mission, and my personal mission, is to create a culture that’s committed to sustainability – an appreciation of our earth and a desire to protect it, our communities, and future generations.

We work to achieve our mission through education and empowerment for action. Until recently, CSUSA operated only in California. There we have conducted programs with city governments, public schools, and community groups.

Our programs educate participants about sustainability and empower them through compelling stories, statistics, and group commitment to take personal, community, and political action to protect the planet. We use science-based mechanisms like surveys, tracking tools, and feedback to support our work.

The greatest challenge CSUSA has faced besides funding, the ongoing challenge for nonprofits, is finding a way to deliver our program at a scale that will reach a lot of people fast, which is important because addressing sustainability is urgent. We always wished we had the resources to design an app to scale up with.

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with the Map Your World project because it allows us to connect with thousands and thousands of people in the same amount of time that we used to take to connect with hundreds.

I am also excited about this opportunity because it’s all about empowering youth to take the future into their own hands. Youth is key for many reasons, not the least of which is that they naturally spread the word about what they are doing and why, using the power of social media.

Our goal for CSUSA in Tennessee is to educate and empower as many youth as possible to become community leaders for change to protect the planet. CSUSA will help students develop the skills to talk to people about sustainability and the need for change and to inspire action. Research shows that being a part of an organization like CSUSA is critical to keeping youth engaged in advocating for change after an initial training program is over.

We’ll be here not only to train youth but also to keep empowered youth motivated and involved over the long term. Thank you all again so much for being here today. I am excited to be a part of this and I hope you’ll join us.

Imagine a world where everybody does the little things...
